English author and screenwriter Sir Compton Mackenzie who found much of his inspiration in Scotland, his adopted home. Mackenzie worked as a soldier, secret service chief, actor, broadcaster and editor of 'Gramophone' but is best known as a playwright and author. He gave up studying law to write and published his first novel 'The Passionate Elopement' in 1911. His prolific output includes 'Whisky Galore' which was made into an Ealing Studios comedy film.
