Carmine Naccarat is rich, opaque and beautifully smooth to paint with. An extremely lush and opaque deep pink, this pigment derives from Cochineal, a dye produced from ground Cochineal insects! These insects live on pads of prickly pear cacti and when brushed off and dried are then ground to produce a powdered dye. Lake pigments are made by dyeing a base like clay or alum (potassium aluminum sulfate). It’s a fascinating process of transforming a dye into a pigment and allows us to make natural paint from not only the standard earth and mineral substances but plants and insects as well! Cochineal was first used in Central America (Mayan and Aztec) before colonization as a textile dye and is still being heavily used as a fabric and yarn dye. The Cochineal insect is native to South America, Mexico and Arizona due to the specific growth of the prickly pear cactus in these regions and the insect’s parasitic relationship with only this type of cactus. After the colonization of Central and South America, Cochineal became a major export good and continues to be widely used and beloved around the world! Please note that Carmine is not 100% lightfast, and may fade over time in direct sunlight.
