Fisher-Mill Plain — More than 270 youths in the Vancouver East Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints learned a bit about the hardship experienced by the Mormon pioneers who migrated to the Salt Lake Valley 170 years ago on a “Pioneer Trek” of their own last month near Trout Lake. From July 27-30, the youths stepped away from the modern world, doing away with things such as personal electronics and watches, and walked while pulling and pushing handcarts, singing, dancing and eating together for four days. Each pioneer was given a five-gallon bucket to hold their personal items, including a change of clothes, scriptures, a journal, a mess kit, soap, a towel, first aid kit and extra socks and underwear. The youths were split up into groups of about 10, and they had to put their buckets, sleeping bags, sleeping pads and water in one handcart, pushing throughout the day. They walked about five miles a day. The groups also played out various scenarios, such as having handcarts stolen by a pretend mob, whole “families” becoming ill and needing others to step in to help the sick, walking a mile in silence through a burned area of forest and pulling handcarts up a steep hill for a mile.
